BC LANDSCAPES

My first landscape paintings involved breaking the canvas into sections – one section was canvas covered with gesso, the next section was altered by laying cheese cloth and holding it in place with medium. This treatment created two visions of the same place and altered both my view as painter and other’s view as audience. Perceptions were changed by the interaction of paint and surface just as a place may alter with changes in mood, weather and season.

As I have continued to paint landscapes, I have been attracted to the idea of capturing a moment in time – a moment when the sun breaks through behind the clouds or a sky darkens with the threat of an oncoming storm. At the core of all my landscapes and seascapes is a desire to create a sense of place at an emotional level.
